Course Summary:
Raising Aspirations in Careers and Education - Gippsland (RACE - Gippsland) will deliver a range of hands-on, interactive and engaging activities to primary and secondary students focused on building student capacity in STEM, digital technologies, agribusiness, manufacturing and food and fibre concepts, which:
- Raise awareness and increase motivation to pursue one of the vast range of careers across the agricultural supply chain
- Build their knowledge of, and increase their aspirations to undertake further education pathways
- Enhance their life-skills (e.g. communication, resilience, problem solving) by exposing them to potential employers and industry role models
These activities involve teachers and students from primary and secondary schools and agri-food industry ambassadors across the Gippsland Region.
This online resource includes three learning modules:
- Traceability of Gippsland Produce Module
- Diving into Dairy Data Module
- Potato Fries and Food Waste Module
There is no fee associated with this resource.
Learning Outcomes:At the completion of each learning module, teachers and students will have an understanding of:
1. Traceability of Gippsland Produce Module
- Horticulture in Australia including local production in Gippsland
- Technologies used in the horticulture sector
- Traceability
- Food miles and wastage
- The career pathways in the Horticulture sector.
2. Diving into Dairy Data Module
- The Australian dairy industry including local production in Gippsland
- Technologies used in the dairy industry
- Basic data analysis using Excel
- Data interpretation (liveweight, body condition score and milk production)
- The career pathways in the Dairy Industry.
3. Potato Fries and Food Waste Module
- Potato farming in Australia including local production in Gippsland
- How vegetables grow
- The health benefits of potatoes
- The factors to consider for potato fries
- Food waste.
Duration: This online resource is typically delivered over a 10-week school term, however, teachers/students can work at their own pace, for a duration suitable to their teaching program or using learning modules suitable to their teaching program. Each learning module is self-paced and will take 10 hours to complete.
Intakes: Enrolments are taken throughout the year on a
continuous basis.
