Workshop Summary:

Need to learn about, or upskill your food science knowledge?  During this 4-day intensive Residential School, you will undertake a series of food-based experiments which develop practical skills associated with cookery and recipe construction and deconstruction. During this Residential School, you will be given opportunities to explore ways to present scientific food experiments to students in fun, challenging and engaging ways.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Design and perform a series of food-based experiments which develop practical skills associated with cookery and recipe construction
  2. Apply appropriate problem solving procedures to plan, sequence, implement and assess food production processes used in recipe construction
  3. Recognise and apply skills, sequences and procedures using design and problem-solving processes required for teaching a range of cookery skills
  4. Critically evaluate specific applications of recipes and ingredients used in the production of edible foods
  5. Apply appropriate workplace health and safety practices for cookery.

All consumables (i.e. materials necessary to undertake workshop activities).

Assessment: 

    • 4-day participation in practical skills activities
    • teacher demonstration of a food experiment suitable for school
    • self-reflection and peer assessment. 

This 4-day residential school includes:

To teach food-related topics, knowledge of the chemical reactions and processes that occur when food is prepared, cooked and stored is essential. Food educators need the vocabulary, skills and abilities to construct and deliver content in fun and challenging ways. In this Residential School, you will learn teaching strategies to assist students to learn complex scientific processes and perform laboratory testing and experiments on food.

Practical Cookery: Compulsory Attendance (all days inclusive).

Theory Lesson and Teacher Demonstration: In Week 6 of academic term, you will be a allocated day and time for a presentation during Res School. You will be provided with a list of topics. You chose one experiment to perform in front of your peers, with the associated paperwork required. This means you will have 4 weeks to prepare for your presentation. Previous CPD teachers have found this task invaluable as it provides a rare opportunity to receive demonstration skills feedback in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Facilities: Tea and coffee facilities are available. Bring your lunch.

Things to bring:

  • An attitude of fun and adventure;
  • Your learning brain;
  • Appropriate clothing - professional and non-flammable;
  • Closed in footwear - preferably leather sole and upper - this is really important - if you do not have the correct shoes you will be sent out to buy some before you are allowed in the kitchens;
  • Purchase your textbook - Cooking as a Chemical Reaction: Culinary Science with Experiments, Second Edition (2019), Authors: Sibel Z. Ozilgen, CRC Press Boca Raton , Fl. , USA, ISBN: 978113859712;
  • Device for taking photos, videos and accessing the internet;
  • A notebook and pen; and
  • Theory statements, lesson plans, workplans and anything else you need for your Demonstration Task - You will receive more information to prepare you for this Res School in Week 6 (that is week starting Monday 27 August 2023). I will send you all the information you will need to prepare then.

Workshop Summary:

This Fashion Design Professional Development Short Course will provide you with the pedagogical content knowledge and skills to teach Fashion Design in schools. This 4-day intensive workshop is created so that new to the field and experienced Home Economics and Fashion Design teachers will be inspired to create engaging and contemporary fashion design projects for students. With the support of a highly-skilled Fashion Design tutor, you will be guided through activities that match your sewing and design experience. The expert tutor will introduce you to a variety of tools and equipment used in typical textiles classrooms while also providing important risk management, organisational skills, and workplace health and safety strategies to ensure safe and efficient classrooms.

This 4-day workshop includes:

  • Design and construct one casual fashion daywear outfit for yourself. The garment will:
    • suite your figure type
    • appeal to your own unique style
    • include a variety of refined Fashion Design skills to provide you with enough challenge to further develop your skills
    • have at least two complex sewing skills (e.g. zip or other closure, lining, insert sleeves, waistband, pleats, embellishment eg. insert piping, pocket) and a range of basic sewing skills (e.g. darts, seams, hems, neatening)
    • have a care label.
  • Sustainable practices
  • Classroom management for high-risk equipment and environments.

Resources that participants need to provide:

On registration and payment, you will receive an information booklet that outlines materials (fabrics, embellishments, fasteners, pattern, etc) that need to be purchased prior to attendance. You will also receive some reference material and templates for completion. The information booklet also contains instructions about tasks that need to be completed prior to attendance. It is advisable that tasks be started at least 4 weeks prior to the workshop.

Resources provided for participants:

The equipment and tools required to complete the garment will be supplied.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explore fashion literacy and terminology within a variety of contexts
  2. Analyse and apply the elements and principles of fashion design
  3. Discern appropriate materials and fibre selection for designed solutions
  4. Create a designed fashion product demonstrating technical, procedural and safety skills
