Workshop Summary:
Need to learn about, or upskill your food science knowledge? This Culinary Science for Teachers Professional Development Workshop will provide you with pedagogical content knowledge and skills required to teach Years 7-12 Food Technology, Senior Food & Nutrition and Hospitality. During this 3-day intensive, you will undertake a series of food-based experiments which develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills associated with cookery, recipe construction and food formulations. You will be guided through ways to explore and present food experiments to students in fun, challenging and engaging ways. You will adhere to food safety practices, risk assessment procedures, and comply with relevant hospitality industry regulations and requirements when engaging in school-based kitchen operations, food production and food service.
Learning Outcome Summary:
- Design and perform a series of food-based experiments that develop practical skills associated with cookery and recipe construction
- Recognise and apply skills, sequences and processes required for teaching a range of cookery skills
- Apply appropriate workplace health and safety practices for cookery.
Workshop Highlights:
- Chemical and Mechanical Reactions: Gain insights into the reactions that occur when food is prepared, cooked, and stored.
- Food Educator Skills: Develop the vocabulary, skills, and abilities to deliver content to students in an engaging manner.
- Teaching Strategies: Learn effective methods to help students understand complex scientific processes and perform food testing and experiments.
Resources provided for participants:
All consumables (i.e. ingredients, materials necessary to undertake workshop activities).
Assessment:
- 3-day participation in practical skills activities
Optional assessment (recommended):
- teacher demonstration of a food experiment suitable for school
- self-reflection and peer assessment.

Residential Schools are always held during September Education Queensland School Holidays
at the same times each year.

Venue: Wilbys Commercial Kitchen and Restuarant, B Block, Rockhampton City Campus, Canning Street, Rockhampton.
Starting & Finishing Times: All workshop sessions are conducted from 8.30 am to 5:00 pm, unless otherwise advised.
Delivery Method: Face-to-face workshop
Facilities: Tea and coffee facilities are available. Bring your lunch.
Things to bring:
- An attitude of fun and adventure;
- Your learning brain;
- Appropriate clothing - professional and non-flammable;
- Closed in footwear - preferably leather sole and upper - this is really important - if you do not have the correct shoes you will be sent out to buy some before you are allowed in the kitchens;
- Device for taking photos, videos and accessing the internet;
- A notebook and pen; and

Undertaking this Professional Development Workshop enables students to partially meet their Continuing Professional Development obligations and industry update requirements in their profession. Upon successful completion of the Professional Development Workshop, students will be awarded a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours Certificate of Completion.
