Workshop Summary:

This Textile Technology Professional Development Workshop will provide you with the pedagogical content knowledge and skills required to teach Years 7-10 Textile Technology classes. This 3-day intensive workshop will inspire and (re)invigorate your passion for textiles through fun and engaging hands-on learning experiences where basic skills and the latest developments in textile technology are explored. This experience will provide an uplifting and contemporary perspective of home economics, textiles education and Design and Technologies curriculum. Regardless of your textiles experience, your daily activities can be negotiated to either “teach you the basics” or extend you to mastery. During the 3 days, you will develop a creative portfolio of textile samplers. An expert tutor will introduce you to a variety of tools and equipment used in a typical textiles classroom while also providing important risk management and workplace health and safety strategies to ensure safe and efficient classrooms.

This 3-day workshop includes:

  • Sewing technique samplers
  • Felt work
  • Creative textile mediums
  • Mixed media design
  • Natural dyes and tie-dye techniques
  • Simple product construction using a block pattern
  • Bag design and construction
  • Embellishments
  • Sustainable practices
  • Classroom management for high-risk equipment and environments.

Resources provided for participants:

Many of the resources required will be supplied for participants; however, additional items will need to be sourced prior to attendance. On registration and payment, you will receive an Information Kit that will outline tasks that need to be completed prior to attendance and resources that need to be gathered and brought to the workshop.

Assessment: 

    • 3-days participation in practical skills activities
    • Portfolio of textile samplers.

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

    • Design and create textile products
    • Apply theories and pedagogies to teach textile technology
    • Explore innovative textile processes and production skills and knowledge
    • Investigate ethical and sustainable textile contexts
    • Adhere to Workplace Health and Safety considerations when engaging in textile technology production.

Days, Dates & Venue:  3-day intensive workshops are always held during Education Queensland School Holidays at the same times each year. 

2025 Dates: Monday 7 July to Wednesday 9 July 2025

Venue: The Cathedral College, Rockhampton 

Starting & Finishing Times:  All workshop sessions are conducted from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm, unless otherwise stated

Dress: Please wear covered non-slip footwear and suitable protective clothing

Delivery Method:  Face-to-Face Workshop

Relevant For:  All teachers interested in Textile Technology. The workshops are excellent for in-field upskilling and out-of-field teachers to gain insight into the specialised knowledge and safety requirements for teaching Home Economics and related subjects in the Middle and Senior Years of schooling.

Undertaking this Professional Development Workshop enables students to meet their Continuing Professional Development obligations and industry update requirements in their profession. Upon successful completion of the Professional Development Workshop, students will be awarded a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours Certificate of Completion.
