Course Summary:

This online micro-credential provides pre-reading for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) STAR Program Essential Aspects of Aeromedical Retrieval. Relevant components of retrieval medicine, including the application of content from the online micro-credential, as they apply to the aeromedical environment will be covered during the RFDS STAR Program. The course includes theoretical aspects of patient care in the retrieval environment and outlines case studies and examples which will be further explored at the 2-day Essential Aspects of Aeromedical Retrieval Workshop.

Completion of this online micro-credential is required before the Essential Aspects of Aeromedical Retrieval Workshop. Access is provided through RFDS once you have successfully applied to complete the STAR program.

This is a non-creditable micro-credential which is awarded a digital badge and Certificate of Completion which can be shared to your social networks and displayed in your professional portfolio.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Gain an understanding of the historical perspectives of aeromedical retrieval medicine
  2. Outline considerations in retrieval medicine, including aviation physiology and the effect on patients, crew, and equipment, aviation considerations, modes of transport, resource provision and patient safety
  3. Describe the considerations and clinical management of special populations including the cardiac, bariatric, obstetric, paediatric, trauma, and disturbed patient in the retrieval setting
  4. Outline the key elements of hazard and scene safety in aeromedical retrieval, including human factors and situational awareness in unfamiliar settings
