Course Summary:

The Building Strong Foundations program is an online business entrepreneurship micro-credential designed for Indigenous participants interested in developing sustainable business skills, knowledge and networks in their local communities. Topics covered include business communication, legal frameworks in business, online (digital) marketing strategies for the SME and compliance with workplace and occupational health and safety legislation. Additional course resources include grant writing techniques, use of search optimisation strategies in the online (social media environment and how to develop your best social media and professional profile for your business. Students will gain skills and develop essential tools to develop a Business Portfolio including a business model canvas, strategic marketing plan, professional profile, risk assessment and earn how to apply the principles of project management to successfully manage key projects for your Indigenous business.

The program is available for Councils, Local Government Associations, First Nations Organisations and Industry to sponsor Indigenous business owners from their community. The Building Strong Foundations program will be offered with a cohort of 15 to enable participants to collaborate with their peers on the journey to developing an Indigenous business. Face to face workshops can be facilitated on specific topics from this Program based on Industry requirements.

This online micro-credential provides a non-creditable micro-credential and digital badge which can be shared to your social networks and displayed in your professional portfolio.

Learning Outcomes:  

  1. Define the knowledge and skills required to establish an Indigenous Business in Queensland
  2. Identify the legal elements and obligations when establishing and managing a business
  3. Apply basic financial management concepts and tools in business management
  4. Develop a marketing plan for your business using principles of marketing and utilising contemporary marketing tools
  5. Reflect on the leadership and management skills to successfully apply in your business
  6. Develop project management skills in your business setting
  7. Gain the essential grant writing and tender writing skills for funding and business opportunities
  8. Establish a network of Indigenous contacts and resources to sustain your business
  9. Identify industry OHS legislation relevant to your business
  10. Develop a business improvement and growth plan through the custom building of your own 'Business Portfolio'.

This micro-credential provides professional upskilling for Indigenous Business owners, or those wishing to develop their business skills.

Undertaking this micro-credential enables students to meet their Continuing Professional Development obligations and industry update requirements in their profession. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be awarded Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours, a non-creditable micro-credential (Digital Badge) and a Certificate of Completion.
